What is Mental Health Awareness?
This is the ongoing effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing our personal experiences.
Often, because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people often suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated.
Fact Sheet
Depression
- Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, it is estimated that 5.0% of adults suffer from depression.
- Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.
- More women are affected by depression than men.
- Depression can lead to suicide.
- There is effective treatment for mild, moderate, and severe depression.
Mental Disorders
- There are many different mental disorders, with different presentations.
- Mental disorders include: depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, dementia, and developmental disorders including autism.
- There are effective strategies for preventing mental disorders such as depression.
- There are effective treatments for mental disorders and ways to alleviate the suffering caused by them.
Suicide
- More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.
- For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.
- Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-19 year-olds.
- 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
- Ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide globally.
Adolescent Mental Health
- Globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder, accounting for 13% of the global burden of disease in this age group.
- Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.
- Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-19 year-olds.
- The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.
About Tuli Ffenna Foundation
Established in 2020, Tuli ffena foundation is a non -government organization headquartered in Kampala, Uganda, being led by a group of young enthusiastic minds, creating awareness on the rampant vice of mental health issues in society especially in the young adults and matures age group.
Tuli ffena membership includes a growing number of youth from various countries such as Russia, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Ghana.
